Crispy Chilli Beef

Another classic Chinese fakeaway dish - and surprisingly easy to make!

Crispy beef strips coated in a spicy, sticky sauce - ideal for pairing with rice or noodles, vegetables or on its own!

The ingredients list seems long for this one - but it is so worth it, and once all of the weighing / measuring is done, the method is a breeze!

We stock all of the herbs & spices used in this recipe - they can be found on our site.

Ingredients

400g steak - finely sliced

1 egg - beaten

4tbsp corn flour

1 onion - finely sliced

1/4 tsp salt

1/4tsp MSG

2tbsp rice vinegar

3tbsp dark soy sauce

2tbsp tomato puree

6tbsp caster sugar

2tbsp tomato ketchup

2tbsp honey

*these ingredients can be mixed together in advance

Method

  1. Add the sliced steak to a bowl and add the beaten egg, mix well until the steak is fully coated, add the cornflour, salt, pepper & MSG.

  2. Mix well ensuring the steak is completely coated.

  3. Heat oil in a wok until it begins to smoke, add the beef strips, flatten until one layer and leave to cook & crisp for 2-3 minutes, flip the beef and cook on the other side for a further 2-3 minutes, remove and set aside.

  4. Heat more oil and add the onion and cook for 2 minutes until it begins to soften, add all remaining ingredients and mix well, add a splash of water if the consistency is too thick.

  5. Add the beef and mix well, ensuring it is well coated in the sauce.

  6. Cook for around 1-2 minutes and serve hot.
